Challenge Accepted: Donors Meet Match from Newman’s Own Foundation

by Kat Gloor, Director of Development

Last month the Playhouse was proud to announce a $75,000 challenge grant from Newman’s Own Foundation… and this month we’re even prouder to announce that patrons like you went above and beyond to meet that challenge! Over 300 individuals and families made a donation to your Playhouse in December, and doubled their impact thanks to this dollar-for-dollar match.

So why is this so important? As a recent article in Inside Philanthropy noted, “inevitably, there are certain things beyond the Playhouse's control. Namely, the fact that it's really, really difficult to pay for operational and capital expenses with ticket sales alone…. This is a fairly common phenomenon, thanks to good old fashioned market economics, of course. The Playhouse, like every other performance-based nonprofit out there, must straddle that fine line between excessive ticket prices that can drive away an audience and prices so low that it severely restricts cash flow.”

Your donations ensure that ticket prices remain accessible, and help subsidize special programs like educational and community engagement initiatives, the nationally-recognized Woodward Internship Program, and Together at the Table, which provides families with dinner and a show for just $10 a ticket. Thank you for investing in this important work!

You can still join Friends of Westport Country Playhouse, and enjoy special donor benefits throughout the season. Click here to make a gift today, or contact Development Director Kathryn Gloor at kgloor@westportplayhouse.org or (203) 571-1131.
