As a “newbie” here at the Playhouse, I’m still learning about all the different events and programs we do during the year – and it’s a lot! During the season, we have special programs, receptions, symposiums, student matinees… the list goes on. And when we’re presenting our Winter at the Playhouse programming, we have readings and family shows and rentals. I’m a little surprised by how busy we stay all year ‘round! But one of the events I’m most looking forward to, I must admit, is Playhouse Community Day, this year to be held on April 14th from 10:00am – 3:00pm.
2012 will mark the 3rd Annual Community Day and this year, we’re kicking things up a notch. In years past, the day has been about celebrating the Playhouse; this year, we want to celebrate the Playhouse but also celebrate our fantastic community partners. Playhouse Community Day 2012 will still feature the great behind-the-scenes access to the Playhouse you’re used to, with backstage tours, displays from our past and upcoming productions and an insider’s sneak peek into the 2012 Season. But this year, we will also have tables and activities highlighting some of our fellow local, non-profit organizations, including the Westport Public Library, the Westport Weston Family YMCA, Earthplace, Westport Farmers’ Market and Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County.
Several of our community partners will have a table with a special activity: the Library will be doing story time with the fairy tales that are featured in Into the Woods; Earthplace will have their box turtle, Zeke, on hand and a craft for kids to make their own turtle; the Westport-Weston Y will be doing a special craft for kids and the Playhouse will be making paper bag puppets with kids, complete with a puppet theater for impromptu puppet performances! Neighborhood Studios will have a group of their students here, performing at various points throughout the day. And we’ll even have a few vendors from the Westport Farmers’ Market selling and sampling their delicious food. Can you see why I’m so excited?
If you feel a bit peckish after a backstage tour, not only will our concessions be open but we’re incredibly fortunate to have some tasty samples available, donated by generous local businesses. Rizzuto’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, o.a.t.s granola and the Norwalk Hilton Garden Inn will all be providing snacks throughout the day and Chef Pietro Scotti from Da Pietro’s is scheduled to do a cooking demonstration at 12 noon. I’m sure he’ll have some delicious samples to give out as well!
With so many exciting activities happening, we’ll be opening up the entire campus so don’t be surprised if you discover an area you’ve never been before. There will be maps and plenty of staff to help you navigate and to ensure you don’t miss any of the excitement.I hope you’ll join us for Playhouse Community Day, this Saturday, April 14th from 10:00am – 3:00pm! I can’t think of a better way to truly celebrate the Playhouse and our community than by gathering with our neighbors for a day of fun for all our patrons.
